Shakur Stevenson seems a fight away from lightweight title shot with the WBC ordering an eliminator earlier today a fight with No.2 ranked Isaac Cruz to decide the mandatory for Devin Haney undisputed Lightweight title.
Pitbull Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KOs) is a dangerous fight for Stevenson (19-0, 9 KOs) and it remains to be seen if his promoters will honour the announcement by the WBC as they intended to pair Stevenson up with the Winner or the upcoming fight between Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Haney holds all the marbles at 135 and could choose to vacate the belts for a move to 140 pounds. That will mean Stevenson ranked No.4 could be in the mix to fight for the title unless the WBC orders Lomachenko and No 2 ranked Isaac Cruz to fight for the vacant belt.
Stevenson already a two-divison champion would grow his popularity, if he faces Isaac Cruz instead of the winner of the Lomachenko Vs Haney undisputed fight. A good fight for Stevenson and should be the best route for his promoter Top Rank. Stevenson however needs a fight while staying out his time waitingvfir the fight with between Haney and Lomachenko.
There is a possibility that Haney will vacate the title if he emerges victorious against Vasiliy Lomachenko. Stevenson with that will most likely be fighting for the vacant title. Cruz has however been good in his last three outings against Eduardo Ramirez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
Pitbull could cause some issues for Stevenson, if they eventually meet as the former uses his height to his advantage. Sneaking in and battering his opponents from the inside, a technique he used very effectively against Gervonta Tank Davis and Yuriokis Gamboa.
Stevenson is an evasive fighter, one with a very good defence but will have issues, if he can’t stay away from Cruz. Cruz battles from the inside, while Stevenson likes to keep his space and attack using angles.
