Johnny Walker kick started the UFC 279 Main Card with a first round submission victory over Ion Cutelaba at the T-Mobile Arena, Live on Pay-Per-View.
Walker, who bounced back into the win column, kept his promise of leaving the judges out of the outcome. Walker (19-7 MMA, 5-4 UFC) slid in the Rear Naked Choke, ending the Light Heavyweight contest in less than a minute to go in the opening round.
Both fighters started out swinging and even exchanged head kicks very early in the fight. Cutelaba (16-8-1 MMA, 5-7-1 UFC) quickly took the fight to the canvas, scoring the takedown was impressive, however he was only able to score few strikes and a little moment of top control before attempting to end the fight with an arm bar.
Walker was able to escape the submission attempt, manoeuvring his way to Cutelaba’s back, which marked the beginning of the end for the latter. Cutelaba was subjected to numerous RNC attempts and Neck Crank attempts as he desperately tried to get himself out of the position. Walker was able to lock a perfect RNC and ended the fight 20 seconds before the end of the round.
Walker’s win snaps his two fight losing skid, which came in the hands of Thiago Santos and Jamahal Hill. The submission victory is his first under the UFC banner as prior to his losses, his four victories in the UFC were won with strikes.
Ion Cutelaba returns to the drawing board after failing in his attempt to get back to the win column. Before this fight, he was last seen losing via first round stoppage to Ryan Spanning May and his last win was back in September, when he defeated Devin Clark with a unanimous decision.
