Jose Pedraza was able to open a cut on Commey’s left eye in the sixth round and then capitalised, eventually taking over control of the fight in the late rounds as Commey gradually faded but didn’t do enough to convince the Judges, he won the fight.

Judge Gary Ritter scored the fight, a 95-95, Judge Henry Gueary scored the fight for Jose Pedraza 97-93, awarding him seven rounds while Judge David Sutherland scored the fight 94-94, giving Commey six round, making the fight a split draw after 10 Rounds.

Pedraza (29-4-1, 14 KOs), who made his 140 pound debut, was a 3-1 favourite before the fight, however, Ghana’s Commey (30-4-1, 27 KOs) was a handful with Compubox unofficial stats indicating the fight was close, Pedraza landing just 16 more connections than Commey (165-of-496 to 149-of-684).

Pedraza has however recorded a victory for himself despite the scorecards and made reference to a punch he connected in the ninth round as a catalyst and inspiration for his victory.

“I landed a great body shot,” Pedraza said in reference to a punch that connected in the ninth round. “I felt that I hurt him, and that gave me the inspiration to keep going after him. I actually believe [the ninth and 10th rounds] were the rounds that gave me the victory tonight, despite what the scorecards say.”

Commey was making his 140 pound debut and was fighting for the first time since his Unanimous Decision loss to Vasily Lomachenko, while Jose Pedraza was fighting for the first time since losing a unanimous decision to Jose Ramirez in their title eliminator back in March at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.

Both had hoped to bounce back from their Unanimous Decision loses in the fight but settled with a draw. Commey and Pedraza both lost to former unified lightweight champions in their last outing and could still be big draws at 140 despite going two fights without a win.
