Bantamweight contender Marlon Vera scored a very rare knockout victory over Frankie Edgar at UFC 268 on Saturday night. The Main Card aired on Pay-Per-View Following Prelims on ESPNews and ESPN+.
Edgar (24-10-1 MMA, 18-10-1 UFC) got stunned when Vera (20-7-1 MMA, 12-6 UFC) lunched a front kick up to the middle, ending the fight at exactly 3:50 minutes in round three.
The event took place at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
Edgar was the vibe in the first round and controlled the fight with his movements, moving quickly in and out of Vera’s range. Then scored a takedown moments later and on the mat, evaded a Guillotine submission and controlled the fight till the end of the round.
The dominance continued in the second round with Edgar controlling the proceedings in the and Vera had some good replies for him till he found an opening 70 seconds into the fight. Edgar was very dominant at the top. Vera defended a takedown moments later and stunned Edgar with a punch that backed him up. Edgar showed heart while the momentum switched to Vera’s favour and the latter applied more pressure and clean shots as he looked forward to the final round.
The this round was more competitive than the first two as both fighters staged a back and forth battle but Vera had the edge as he confidence kept growing. As the round was running to a close, Vera unleashed a front kick that dropped Edgar and followed that up with a ground and pound, for ung Todd Anderson to stop the fight.
Vera has now been able to set his name on history records, becoming the only fighter with the highest number of stoppage victories in the UFC Bantamweight History with nine, while Edgar has now gone 1 – 2 since dropping to the bantamweight division.
