Santos was able Match the division slugger Walker, who during the build up was the favourite to win by stoppage. However, Santos shared the cage through five rounds and emerged with a unanimous decision 48 – 47, 48-47, 48 – 47 on all three score cards.
Santos came into the fight in the back of three losses and had no room for another loss. Against Walker, he needed to make a statement to prove that he still belongs to the 205 pound elite class, which he did while cruising to the decision win on Saturday.
There was very little action from Beth fight fighters in the first round of the fight as both tried their best to get there striking range. Walker kept trying to close the distance, scoring low kicks and trying to punch. Santos did his part, trying to throw kicks and did his best to always avoid getting caught in the first round.
Both fighters got involved in a scramble early in the second round as Walker kept punishing Santos with leg kicks which forced Santos to reply with a takedown attempt but that failed too as both got swallowed up in a back and forth affair, where they both narrowly missed.
Santhosh was finally able to find his range in the third round and punished Walker with leg kicks and some big right hands. Walker was forced into retreat as he was able to get his range and had no reply for the kicks Santos was sending his direction.
In the Fourth round, Santos got his game as Walker registered little or no offence in the fight. Big kicks from Santos kept connecting, coupled with his counter rights. Walker attempted some Oblique Kicks and connected a counter punch.
The final round was the most eventful round as both fighters noticed they could still emerge victorious, with that exchanges were made till Santos wobbled Walker with a big right. Santos couldn’t get the finish and Walker recovered and started looking for a big shot of his own. Santos remained focused till the end of the fight to win the fight.
Santos reveled in his post fight interview that the fight was his last on his UFC Contract.
“First of all, I need to tell something: People know what I went through (with my injuries and losses),” Santos said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “I fight every single day to be here, and I will not stop.”
