Sandor Martin Stuns Mikey Garcia With Majority Decision
Sandor Martin pick up the biggest win off his professional career with a 10 round majority decision over Former Four division Champion Mikey Garcia on Saturday night.
The little known Spaniard was a huge underdog in what was considered a stay busy/ comeback fight for Garcia, who planned on moving onto bigger fights but things went south as Martin out-worked the Garcia and ultimately defeated him with a majority decision.
The fight was scored 97-93, 97-93 and 95-95 for Martin, with the last score being a little questionable as the unofficial scores for the fight showed Martin winning at-least seven rounds of the fight.
“I know myself, my capabilities. I’ve been doing this since I was 5 years old,” Martin said through a translator. “I said I would go and out do this, go out and beat the best fighters in the world. And that’s what I’ve done.
“… I’m very happy for what I’ve done. I’ve done something nobody has ever done from my country, to defeat someone who was a four-division world champion like Mikey Garcia.”
Garcia (40-2, 30 KOs) was fighting for the first time since out-pointing Jesse Vargas about a year and six months ago but was still expected to make an easy work of Martin (39-2, 13 KOs), who hasn’t fought anyone on Garcia’s level and fighting for the first time outside of Europe.
Martin with the victory introduced himself to the world and will be open for bigger opportunities as Garcia is arguably one of the biggest fighters in Boxing History.
Martin has promised to give Garcia a second chance but will love their next meeting to happen at 140 pounds instead of the 147pounds.
“He gave me this opportunity,” Martin said. “Perhaps I can give him an opportunity. What I really want to do is go back down to 140 and fight the best fighters, fight for titles.”
Garcia will now go back to the drawing board with his plans blown up after the loss. He was planning to get a fight with Regis Progrias or possibly an undisputed title fight with Josh Taylor at 140 pounds.
Garcia has also expressed he likes the idea of a rematch with Sandor Martin and has no excuses for his loss.
“I can definitely consider a rematch,” he said. “I think two more rounds would be beneficial. I thought I was coming on better in the later rounds. But no excuses. That’s the way it is.”
