Middleweight contender Derek Brunson was written off ahead of his fight with Darren Till but silenced his critics with a submission victory over the heavily favoured former UFC welterweight title challenger in the Main Event of UFC Vegas 36 (UFC Fight Night 191).
Brunson came into the fight on the back of a five fight winning streak that earned him spots above Till on the Ranking but due to whatever reason, Darren Till was heavily favoured to win the fight and Brunson sure did silenced his critics, when he sunk in the Rare Naked Choke at exactly 2:13 of the third round.
Brunson, whose victory could earn him a title shot in his next outing, used the opportunity after the fight to call out the champion Israel Adesanya.
“I’m tired of these guys not mentioning my name,” Brunson shouted following his latest win. “You know [Israel Adesanya], look at the camera, mention my name. I heard you mentioning Till and [Jared] Cannonier. Cause I’ve been busting my butt, four years after my loss to get back to this point. I’m ready to contend.”
Till started the fight declaring his intentions and pressured Brunson with stiff jabs that was finding its home on Brunson and backing him up. Brunson answered with a perfectly timed takedown, then took the top position before battering till with ground and pound. Brunson used all the shots in his arsenal to batter Till till the end of the round.
Till’s eyes had almost closed from that beating and entering the round there was need for a change in technique. Till slowed down and carefully defended Brunson takedown attempts but this affected his offence as he wasn’t throwing enough attacks to keep Brunson away, leaving the latter no choice but to take the fight to the canvas again.
Brunson was much less damaging with his attacks this time but controlled the fight with his elbows and punches, giving till no room to breath.
Till was better in the beginning of the third and looked sharper, landing lefts and backing up Brunson but as things looked finished for Brunson, the latter took the fight to the canvas and mounted at the top, this forced Till to struggle and look for routes for escape and while doing that opened his back up for a submission. Brunson took it and forced Till to tap.
Brunson is now on a five fight winning as streak and hasn’t had a loss since his loss to reigning champion Isreal Adesanya three years ago. A loss Brunson plans to avenge, otherwise he will sit and wait till he gets the shot.
