The two first met in UFC 47, when Diaz picked up a second round knockout victory. However, the rematch 17 years later ended with a reversed result.
Diaz jumped out of his corner with a spinning back kick after the opening bell but that missed and he quickly dodged a combination from Lawler before holding him up in the clinch. Lawler exploded with a few combination forcing Diaz backwards, with the latter trying to land combinations of his own.
Lawyers progressively dealt with Diaz, landing power punches while the latter was busy landing some vicious and brutal shots. However , Lawler finished the round better.
Lawler landed a liver kick in the opening period of the second round and that caused a lot of pain for Diaz, who worked away in a bid to recover before both then engaged in another back and forth boxing exchanges. Lawler capped everything up with a flurry before the bell.
Lawler connected a big right hook in the third round, completed it with a left upper cut that sent Diaz to the canvas. Lawler called on Diaz to stand up and continue the fight which was scheduled for 5 rounds but the legend refused forcing the referee to stop the fight.
Before the fight UFC 266, Diaz stayed away from the Cage since 2015 and left competitive fighting since losing to Anderson Silva at UFC 186. The loss was later overturned to a no contest as the Brazilian failed a pre-fight drug test.
Lawler a former UFC welterweight champion, snapped a four fight loosing skid with the victory and was last seen in action losing to Neil Magny in August. During his time as champion, Lawler defended the belt twice before getting knockout by Tyron Woodley at UFC 201.
