Manchester United Bounced back from their string of two home Defeats with a stunning comeback 2 – 1 win over Villareal in UEFA Champions League Group H Match Day 2 at Old on Wednesday evening.
A battle between two Europa League Finalist last season, Villareal edged Manchester United with Penalties to win the second tier European competition trophy last season. However it is worthy of note how the “Red Devils” comported themselves after going a goal down.
Manchester United were looking like a team about to go three straight games without a win, they had already lost 1 – 0 to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup and Missed an opportunity to go top of the Table with another 1 – 0 loss against Aston Villa in the Premier League making this a do or die affair for the English side.
The Yellow Submarines came into this tie with a better record, having taking a point from La Liga Champions Atletico Madrid in their La Liga clash last weekend.
Villareal dominated the First Half and pressed Manchester United, beating them to the ball and creating opportunities in every attack and looked so close to scoring with David De’Gea being the Hero in a period where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Men looked flat footed in all areas of their game.
After a goalless First Half, Villareal broke the deadlock early on the second half and had Manchester United worried but things didn’t look gloomy as the Red Devils changed the tempo of the game and started pressing the game forcing the Yellow Submarines into a defensive position, beating them to the ball and shots were take bilut failed on till the fateful connection between Bruno Fernandes and Alex Telles leveled the game in the 60th minute.
Bruno Fernandes was bullied at the edge of the Villareal Penalty Box winning a freekick and the resulting setpeice was finished off by Alex Telles, a left footed first time volley from outside the box leveled the games. Manchester United still didn’t need a draw from this game as the had also lost the opening game in the Champions League 2 – 1 to Young Boys.
Manchester United pressed the ball, tried as much as possible to win balls in their Half or send the balls back into the opponents Half. Fresh legs were introduced in the second half by both sides. United brought in Carvani , Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard and this all paid off in added time. United soiled Villareal’s plans of going home with a point from Old Trafford.
A cross in from Carvani lands on Jesse Lingard feet and being in a bad angle to shoot sets up Ronaldo at the edge of goal and the Portuguese blasted in a very crucial shot from about four feets to hand United their first three points.
United with the win will go three points up on the table and will be leveled with Young Boys in the second spot in Group H. Atalanta defeated Young Boys in the other fixtur to go top of the table with four points.
