Anthony Joshua’s Promoter Eddie Hearn witnessed the 12 round Boxing Masterclass Oleksandr Usyk displayed in his fight with Anthony Joshua on Saturday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Hearn now views the Ukrainian as the Best Pound for Pound fighter in the World, second only behind Mexican fours division Champions Canelo Alvarez.
Usyk (19-0, 13 KOs) a former undisputed Cruiserweight champion, moved up in weight and with just two fights at heavyweight, dethroned Anthony Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs) with a clear 12 round unanimous decision this past weekend at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Hearn believes that Usyk is kind of underrated and not being taken seriously due to his first two fights at heavyweight but after the victory, Hearn believes it confirms his case and pushes him up the pound for pound ladder.
“Two, yeah, after Canelo,” Hearn said when he asked about Usyk’s pound-for-pound status during the post-fight press conference. “I think, I mean, you know, when he was at cruiserweight, everybody called him a top five pound-for-pound. But then when he went to heavyweight, he kind of went off everyone’s radar. But after that win, I mean, he has to be on everyone’s top pound-for-pound. I mean, when you go through the resume of beating Huck in Germany, Gassiev in Russia, Breidis in Latvia, Bellew in Manchester, Chisora in the UK, Joshua [in London], I mean, it’s unbelievable.”
Oleksandr Usyk is gradually taking out the best fighters and that started out with handing Former cruiserweight champions Mairis Briedis and Murat Gassiev the first professional loss of their career, before knocking out former WBC Cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew, who was also beaming with confidence from his knockout Victory over David Haye at heavyweight. Usyk went up to Heavyweight afterwards and defeated Chazz Witherspoon before a unanimous decision victory over Dereck Chisora.
Usyk defeated Joshua in his latest outing and Hearn believes that more than established his case and Joshua should be applauded for taking that fight as he had options of vacating the belt and moving on with other options.
“You know, and like I said, maybe we should’ve swerved [Usyk] and just put the belt in the bin,” Hearn said. “But that’s not what AJ’s about. You know, and I come back to giving him credit. I hope people do. Yeah, you know, I see people criticize him. ‘Oh, you know, he didn’t box well. Oh, he’s not that good.’ But like, he’s consistently proved that he’s willing to take all comers, and I think he should be applauded for fighting Oleksandr Usyk – twice.”
Joshua will be expected to make use of the rematch clause, present on their Contract and a date in the first Quarter of 2022 is viewed as the best possible date for the Rematch.
