Warrington was met with 20,000 fans with hopes of seeing the Leeds Warrior carry out a defence carry out a revenge. Everyone including Warrington got frustrated after a good first round got soiled by a clash of heads that stopped the fighting the second round.
The Fans had nothing positive for Lara, creating his entrance with boos as he walk down to the ring. Everything looked quite different from the night Lara shocked Warrington, dropping the former IBF champion twice en route to a ninth round stoppage victory at Wembley.
Warrington looked ready to and really focused for the task ahead even from his entrance and kick started the fight on a high guard, forced Lara to the ropes and broke through his defence landing left hooks. Lara looked determined to bounce back in the second round but an accidental clash of heads made things worst. Lara was cut and bleed. After two more head clashes the fight was stopped as Lara couldn’t make it back to the ring after the one minute break.
“I felt I could cry when it was waved off because I knew how disappointed the fans would be,” Warrington said.
“I’m absolutely gutted. All these people paid their hard-earned money to see me get redemption. These things happen.
“I thought I opened him up with a punch in the first round, but a clash of styles or whatever, the head has hit him and I’m absolutely gutted.
“The gameplan was a bit more defensively minded, but with this crowd I was tempted to get into a bit of a scrap.
“I need to get the slate clean. When I sat down at the end of the first round, I thought this is mine for the taking. I thought I was in for an early night, but not like this. I can only apologize, we will have our redemption eventually.”
Warrington will have to wait out a long while for another chance to avenge his loss to Lara but he still could pick a fight with two champions available, Kid Galahad who won the Vacant IBF title after He refused to defend it and Leigh Wood, who defeated Xu Can to win the WBA title.
Before the Corona Virus Pandemic, Warrington had plans to unify his IBF title with the them WBA champion Xu Can but that didn’t go well with the IBF, who wanted Warrington to fight Kid Galahad but Warrington refused and vacated the title giving room for Galahad to fight for vacant title against ………….
For Mauricio Lara, his injuries from the head clashes were so bad that Eddie Hearn predicted, he will have to wait out a year before competing. However, that was an exaggeration but Lara won’t wait that long and will have to choose among his available options while waiting for another time to avenge his loss.
