Vicente Luque picked up a rather stunning victory over Michael Chiesa on the main card of UFC 265 on Saturday Night, Toyota Centre in Houston. The fight was aired on Pay-Per-View, which followed after Prelims on ESPN+.
Luque (21-7-1 MMA, 14-3 UFC) seemed to be in some deep trouble early in the fight but was able to escape trouble, then submitted Chiesa (17-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) with a D’Arse Choke at exactly 3:45 of the first round.
The two started the fight with exchanges but after a few from Chiesa, he shot for a takedown and successfully took the fight to the canvas. With that, Chiesa immediately hopped on Luque back and looked to finish him off with a rare naked choke.
From then on, Luque wiggled his way out of that but was still in danger as Chiesa’s hands were still locked. He successfully scrambled his way out and then grabbed Chiesa’s neck, going in for the D’Arse Choke and got the tap.
Luque has now won 10 out of his recent 11 outings and is presently on a four fight winning streak which includes victories over Niko Price, Randy Brown and former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.
Chiesa with the loss, saw his four fight winning streak snapped and registered his first defeat since switching to the welterweight division in 2018. Four out of his five losses have been through submissions.
Luque after the win, called out UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, who he trained with as teammates of during Season 7 of “The Ultimate Fighter”. Usman replied the call out but not specifically.
