John Riel Casimero made numerous promises ahead of his fight with Guillermo Rigondeaux but despite failing to deliver a knockout, was able to emerge victorious with a split decision on Saturday night.
Rigondeaux was able to avoid the aggressive Casimero all through the fight and mostly fought on the back-foot, looking for counters and tagging the Filipino fighter from a distance.
Rigondeaux at 40, looked slow and got caught a couple of times by damn, he made Casimero miss. The defending champion looked like a rat on the Treadmill aimlessly running after the defensive mastermind.
Casimero was award the win by the Judges, an appreciation for his work on fight night but Rigondeaux was just too defensive for his age and refused to engage with Casimero which was wise for his age but not for the spectators who expected a brutal war and possibly a stoppage for the money.
Sean Gibbons seemed to gather a few of the fans for himself as he kept telling “Stop Running” “Stop Running” , fueling the boos that emanated from the crowd but that didn’t deter Rigondeaux from his mastered game plan.
