Two Time Heavyweight title challenger Cheick Kongo Makes Steps toward another shot with a submission victory over veteran contender Sergei Kharitonov in the Main Event of Bellator 265 on Friday night at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Kharitonov (32-9 MMA, 3-3 BMMA) was the better fighter in round one and had Round 2, Kongo (31-11-2 MMA, 13-3 BMMA) at arms length, poking him with Jabs and walking him down in the cage. However in round two, Kongo turned things around with punches, hurting the Russian veteran.
Kongo cornered Kharitonov in the cage and kept getting him with punches. Kongo then scored a takedown then worked his way to the mount, Kharitonov rolled and exposed his neck for the choke. Kongo took it and Kharitonov tapped out with just one minute left in round 2.
Kongo 46, made his way back to winning ways, putting his Heavyweight title eliminator defeat to Tim Johnson back in October’s behind him. Kongo has now won nine out of his recent eleven outings.
Kharitonov’s return to the Bellator banner ended with a loss, which is his first loss since his 2019, his first submission loss since 2011 and this snaps his two fight winning streak.
