Rolando Romero pulled off a stunning seventh round knockout victory over Anthony Yigit on Saturday night on Jermell Charlo Vs Brian Castano undercard, which took place on the 17th of July live on ShowTime at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
The fight served as the co-main event of the fight card and served as a good appetiser for the Main event, which had a clear indication of a potential knockout.
Romero was determined to make Yigit pay and made that promise come through, dropping the overweight Yigit three times, ones in the fourth and twice in the seventh round ending a fight that kicked off with a weigh in drama.
Yigit was 5.02 pounds higher than the accepted weight for the bout forcing the sanctioning body to scrap it from being an interim title fight. Romero handed Yigit (24-2-1, 8 KOs) the second loss of his career and the second time losing by technical knockout. His first loss came via the hands of Ivan Baranchyk (20-2, 13 KOs), who stopped him in the seventh round of their World Boxing Super Series in October 2018.
Yigit took the fight on two weeks notice after Austin Dulay (14-2, 10 KOs, 1 NC) pulled out of the fight due to knee injury. He was fighting for the first time in two years.
Romero’s knockout win wasn’t celebrated by the audience but he seemed unfazed by their reaction after his second straight knockout victory against a late replacement. His last win came against Avery Sparrow (10-3, 3 KOs, 1 NC), who replaced Justin Pauldo with just 30 hours notice.
Yigit made Romero miss his power shots in the opening round, tried his best to avoid shots from Romero after realising he was in against a superior puncher.
Romero was mostly off balance in the second round after Yigit blasted him with a big right but while staggering Romero caught Yigit with a right hand, pushing him back at exactly 1:20 of the second round.
Romero went into the fourth confidently but was caught with a big left that made him Wince and move backwards
