Gervonta Davis is looking to become a three division champion when he takes on WBA “regular” Junior welterweight champion Mario Barrios on Saturday night, 26th of June at the State Farm Arena.
Davis (24-0, 23 KOs), who was a two time featherweight champion before moving up to win a lightweight title, will be out to get himself a Junior welterweight strap, two divisions above his weight class.
Davis is coming off , arguably the best win of his career , a sixth round knockout victory over Leo Santa Cruz and has knocked out each of his last 15 opponents and this fight will be his debut at super lightweight.
Barrios on the other hand, has been able to retain his championship status since 2019 and will be hoping to be a barrier to Davis aspirations as he also looks to break into the Pay-Per-View world.
Both fighters are presently undefeated and with both entering the ring on Saturday, someone will leave with a loss. However, Davis goes in a big favourite despite the fact that, he is going up two weight classes for the fight. There are also factions, with doubts about Davis knockout capabilities following him to the new weight class.
However, it is evident how much advantage Barrios has with his height and reach advantages. Especially, if he can use it effectively to his advantage.
