Lightweight Prospect Ryan Garcia has established himself as a contender with a seventh round knockout victory over 2012 Olympic medalist Luke Campbell, Picking up the WBC Interim lightweight title at the American Airlines Arena, Dallas, Texas.
Garcia was able to overcome a second round knockdown staged a competitive performance before sending the two time title challenger down on two knees with a body shot in the seventh round. Campbell delayed getting back to his feet and eventually got counted out by the referee.
Garcia came out fighting behind his Jab and at the same time aggressively following Campbell up in the opening three minutes. Campbell carefully timed the Mexican looking for openings to land a counter. Garcia tried a more aggressive approach in the second round but Campbell showed good defense and was able to drop him with a big hook.
Garcia made it to his feet and didn’t seem too hurt from that shot. Campbell maintained his cool too and didn’t rush in for the finish. Garcia eventually survived the round.
Campbell kept his jab targeting the head and body of the Garcia in the third. Garcia too gave out a fight , coming forward and letting his hands go. The fourth round saw Campbell target the body of the 22 year old. Garcia was however able to land a big right hand before the close of the round.
The two had a close fifth round and had their opportunities to cause damage. However, Garcia looked to be doing more with his flashier shots and was able to hurt Campbell with a hold. Campbell though visibly hurt survived the round.
Garcia senced the damage and quickly went after Campbell in the start of the sixth but the Brit was able to control the pressure and eventually reestablish his Jab, while Campbell kept following him aggressively looking for an opening.
The seventh round was the beginning of the end as Campbell came out firing at Garcia, he instead connected a heavy hook on Campbell’s Rips, the Brit wasn’t able to recover before being counted out by the Referee.
