Mackenzie Dern and Virna Jandiroba was tipped to be a fight between two outstanding grapplers as they both haven’t a knockout on their records but instead they both got stuck on their feets and displayed some outstanding striking performance with Dern edging Jandiroba in the UFC 256 main card about on Saturday night at the UFC Apex.
Mackenzie Dern, a former two time World Jiu-Jitsu Championship gold medalist brought her striking to the table and was able to overcome a broken nose in the second round of the Fight to pick up a unanimous decision victory with scores 29-28 on all scorecards.
Both fighters spent the opening round trying to get their distances right. Dern was the first to draw first blood but within minutes Jandiroba joined in the action, connecting with some serious aggression. Dern was the most precise of the two, in a round dominated by wild haymakers.
The second round was when things began getting ugly, both went out firing with the intentions of making a continuation of their accomplishments in the first. However, Dern accidentally poked Jandiroba in the eye and prompted the referee to give a break. Dern immediately rush Jandiroba after the fight resumed but while doing that was forced to take a knee, which ended up leaving her with a broken nose. Jandiroba had her opportunity to to finish Dern off, having the advantage on the mat but she filled to capitalise.
Dern was able to overcome the injury in the third round and was even able to connect with a devastating right that rocked the former Invicta FC Champion, who was never able to get a good offence and when she tried taking the fight to the mat towards the closing minutes of the fight. Dern ended up on top.
Dern is now on a three fight winning streak with the victory, which marks her fourth career decisions victory. For Jandiroba, the loss saw her two fight winning streak snapped.
