Newcastle United couldn’t stop Liverpool FC from reopening their three point lead on the Premier League table but they were able to steal a point from their visitors, thanks to and exceptional performance by Karl Darlow.
Liverpool stood a chance of going into the new year with five points but Mohammed Salah missed two wonderful opportunities to make that a reality, courtesy of the Newcastle defenders and the Darlow Heroics.
The draw means that the Reds have failed to take three points from four of the bottom six teams in the first 16 games of the season. This game could have ended with another story as Fabian Schar also produced a goal line clearance that also denied Sadio Mane a goal in the second half.
The goalless draw is the first between the two sides in 74 games, which spans 1974 till date.
Liverpool almost took the lead in the eleventh minute after Salah broke through in the left flank, went through the defenders and pulled a fine save from Karl Darlow and the Newcastle Goalie was also able to stop Roberto Firmino from putting the the Reds ahead before halftime.
Liverpool came into the game with an eleven game unbeaten run but though that was retained Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino just couldn’t find a way past Darlow, even when he made some serious miscalculations, like in the case, where Firmino headed wide from a Trent Alexander-Anold cross.
