Sam Allardyce and his West Brom boys picked up a well deserved points from League Leaders Liverpool in their visit to Anfield, a day after boxing day.
Semi Ajayi’s late header was enough to cancel out Sadio Mane’s opener and thereby give the Baggies a point that could help in their relegation battle.
Liverpool as expected, were able to get an early lead, Sadio Mane finished of Joel Matip pass to give the Reds a lead. However, they became sloppy and couldn’t convert their chances from then on. West Brom were able to convert a late opportunity with Semi Ajayi’s header to secure a point, eight minutes to full time.
Liverpool missed out on the opportunity to go five points clear on the Premier League table with the draw. While Allardyce will boast another impressive performance against the Red’s after being the last manager to defeat Liverpool at Anfield.
Liverpool came in with confidence after their 7 – 0 victory over Crystal Palace and with that forced the Baggies back into their own Half. Andrew Robertson, made a few positive runs in the final third but it was Joel Matip that became the provider. There seemed a lot of power on the pass but Mane was able to control the ball with his chest, beating Ajayi and before sending the ball in with a stretch pass Sam Johnstone.
Liverpool immediately went for the second goal, sending in dangerous crosses into the box but West Brom were good defending and clearing with so much discipline after absorbing all the pressure.
The equaliser almost came early for West Brom. Liverpool had Allison Becker to thank for a superb one-on-one save to deny Karlan Grant. Liverpool saw salt added to their wounds as Joel Matip got substituted after a groin injury forced the host into an early substitution.
