UFC Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko retained her title with a unanimous decision win over Jennifer Maia in UFC 255 Co-Main Event on Saturday Night.

The heavily favoured Shevchenko ended up taking the decision but Maia didn’t make it an easy one for the Flyweight Champ. The champion was able to use her superior striking and showed huge development in her grappling while outworking Maia to earn a 49-46 on all three judge’s scorecards.

Shevchenko threw her challenger off balance, detecting the fight should go. She kept scoring takedowns then sitting up on Maia, while the later played defence off her back for most of the fight. Shevchenko ensured Maia had to opportunity to work her way to a submission attempt or even get back to her feet.

After a well dominated first round and Shevchenko looking to continue her ground game, Maia also found her opportunity, scored a takedown of her own and was able to control the fight while on top but didn’t do so much damage. She eventually won the second round.

Shevchenko was forced to up her game after that round, adding more power to her strikes and connected some stiff left jabs. She also sent her opponent a head kick which Maia blocked. She made Maia understand, the title wasn’t leaving her hands without a fight.

The champion was faster than Maia both on foot and on the ground. With determination to put Maia back in the ground, Shevchenko will score a takedown after a few strikes, then pepper Maia from the top, sticking to her closely and giving her to chance to escape.

Time was running out and Maia stepped up her game in he bid to win the title but the champion was so slick while standing and was able to take the attacks from the Brazilian, while adding more damage of her own to Maia. Maia was relentlessly in her effort in her bid but that wasn’t enough as the champion retained her flyweight title.
