Former Cruiserweight World Champion Tony Bellew believes Call Smith will be Canelo Alvarez’s first real test in the 168 pound division, when they both meet in a WBA Super Middleweight championship fight on the 19th of December.
After months of speculation, Canelo made the huge announcement on Tuesday and though, a venue is still yet to be decided, it is likely to be in “Sin City” and will be streamed live on DAZN, Worldwide.
The WBA Super middleweight champion will own all the physical advantages, Height, Reach and Size but has recently been in the ring with John Ryder, who is as studded as Canelo and was subjected to some serious issues, with many saying Ryder had done enough to earn a win.
Canelo will be going into the fight with after a long time away from the ring. He has been away since his eleventh round knock out victory over Sergey Kovalev in November 2019 and before then, he had little trouble knocking out Rocky Fielding in three rounds to win the WBA 168 pound “regular” title.
The four division champion, Canelo is tipped by Bookmarkers as a huge favourite but that’s not the way Bellew sees the contest.
“Make no mistake, Smith is the test of a lifetime for Canelo,” Tony Bellew told Sky Sports.
“Smith is bigger in size, stronger, undefeated. Canelo? I’m not so sure he can deal with the size and the pressure that Smith will bring. The biggest shock that Canelo will find? When Callum gets on the inside he is not to be messed with. I think Callum can shock the world.
“He will be a heavy underdog because Canelo is pound-for-pound up there with the big boys. Canelo is the best counter-puncher in boxing and a devastating body puncher. If anyone has the keys to unlock the door, it is Callum.”
