Chelsea’s FC cruised into the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a 2 – 1win over French side Stade Rennes in their visit to France on Tuesday night.

Frank Lampard’s Blues, who had already defeated the Rennes 3 -0 in the first leg, were quick to declare their intent with a chance as early as the fifth minute. Hudson-Odoi had opened up the Rennes defence with a sweat cross but Timo Werner somehow ballooned the ball over the bar.

Rennes gradually grew into the game and were able to calm the early pressure from their visitors . The began getting more balls, then out of no where Mason Mount won the ball in the middle and found Hudson-Odoi with an outstanding 60 yard pass. Hudson-Odoi took the ball towards goal and finished off the ball under Gomez to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute.

Chelsea would have gone two up nine minutes later with Chilwel playing as a winger opens mount up for a finish but mount was only able to draw a great save from Gomez. Chelsea’s lead was almost cancelled out in the 42nd minute when Chilwel’s back-pass ended up falling into the legs of Guirassy, but the striker failed to make use of the opportunity.

Rennes were able to draw a couple of saves from Chelsea No.1 Mendy, who went into beast mode making some incredible saves and frustrating Guirassy, who had been in a good form for the French side.

Guirassy was finally able to get a ball in for Rennes in the 85th minute, left unmarked he was able to send a Bourigeaud’s corner with a powerful header past Mendy, leveling the game but their lead didn’t last long.

Chelsea got back their lead after an attack saw Werner draw a bueatiful save from Gomez but the ball fizzled into Giroud’s feet and he made no mistake from there.

The game ended 2 -1 in favour of the Blues, who now move alongside Sevilla, who won with the same score in the other fixture into the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, still having two games to spare.
