Gervonta Davis Vs Leo Santa Cruz Happening Post Pandemic – Ellerbe
WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis already has his opponent set and will only be waiting for a date, ones the Corona Virus Pandemic is completely over, according to Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe.
Ellerbe made clear while speaking to Boxingscene, that Davis will be facing Leo Santa Cruz (37-1-1 19 KOs) in his next fight. The fight was initially planned for June but was preparations for the fight got halted by the Corona Virus pandemic before the finalisation and announcement of the fight.
“Leo Santa Cruz will be Tank’s next fight and we’re working through all the aspects of when that might be. We’re working through the details as we speak. We were headed in one direction, and then the pandemic came. We’re regrouping. I can assure you and the fans that both guys want the fight,” said Ellerbe. “Leo is very adamant to fight the biggest and baddest guy out there in Tank Davis. I respect that. It’s a great time for the 130 and 135 pound division. There are a number of excellent fights that can be made. Tank will show all of the critics why he’s one of the best fighters in the world.”
The fight which is expected to be a ShowTime Pay-per-view event currently looks blur, the weight class the fight will be taking place as Davis made his lightweight Debut in his last outing, stopping Yuriokis Gamboa to win the WBA Lightweight title while Santa Cruz fights at Junior lightweight and in his debut at 130 pounds , won the WBA junior Lightweight title.

Despite moving up in weight, Davis had issues making 135 pounds and had to take a second try before making the limit. The weight class for the fight will definitely be the first issue to be ironed out before signatures are laid on the contract.
Leo Santa Cruz moved up, making a successful junior Lightweight debut against Miguel Flores , outworking him to a unanimous decision victory that also earned him a the WBA junior Lightweight title Davis vacated.
Santa Cruz made clear in a statement, that he is willing to face Davis at 130 or 135 pound division but will preferable face him at Junior Lightweight limit.
President Of Events And Sports Programming for Showtime Stephen Espinoza would love to stage the fight immediately after the Corona Virus Pandemic has subsided.
“We were very close [to finalizing a deal before coronavirus],” Espinoza said. “It’s an interesting one, because the fight will do a very good gate regardless of where it is. The fight could fit naturally in Los Angeles. If LA is not ready, certainly Vegas or Texas would make reasonable choices. I do think that will be one of the first few fights we have when we’re back in business.
“A lot of people were surprised at that match-up. Leo is absolutely adamant that he wants the fight. It’s the only fight he wants. He sees something in Davis that guarantees him success. Tank is a physical challenge for anyone, but Leo is undaunted and he’s persistent.”
