Lopez is rated No. 3 by the IBF while Nakatani is rated No. 4 and the top two spots are actually vacant. This makes it more appropriate for the two to collide in order to fill the top two spots.
A win here for Lopez will leave him in the mandatory position to fight IBF lightweight champion Richard Commey, which will in turn open the doors for a unification with WBA/WBO champion Vasiliy Lomachenko in a pay-per-view bout by the first quarter of 2020.
Lopez have been campaigning for a fight with Lomachenko but the Ukrainian feels, Lopez should get a belt to put things evenly at stake.
