Keith Thurman Vacates WBC Title, Shawn Porter – Danny Garcia Ordered
Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) has surprisingly vacated his Welterweight Title Leaving him with the WBA title. The move which has prompted the World Boxing Council has now ordered a fight between #2 WBC Shawn Porter and #1 Danny Garcia to fight for the vacant title.
Thurman’s decision to drop the WBC title has prompted the ordering of a Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia to fight for the vacant belt. Thurman, who still holds the WBA’s super title, will have the option to get an immediate crack at the winner when he returns.
Thurman has been away from the ring for quite a long time, his last defense back in March of 2017, has his titles far past overdue for another defense or a title strip by the sanctioning bodies.
In an interview Thurman explaimed his reasons for vacating the title citing his injuries :”Due to my rehabilitation from my injuries, I agreed to relinquish my WBC title at this time. I continue to rehab my hand and elbow and I look forward to getting back in the ring this summer. This is a temporary setback and I will be the unified champion once again and look forward to winning back my WBC title as soon as possible,” said Thurman.
Thurman will now be back as the WBC mandatory challenger in his return from injury but since, he still has the WBA welterweight title, he could still make a fight with IBF welterweight champion Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr.
The WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman added “Keith Thurman unfortunately has suffered two consecutive injuries that have kept him out of the ring after his sensational victory over Danny Garcia and he has graciously relinquished his title, and the WBC has mandated that Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter will fight for the title,”
said Mauricio Sulaiman.
“Keith will have a direct path to fight for the title once he has healed just as Vitali Klitshcko and other WBC champions have done in the past. Keith is a tremendous athlete, champion and role model. The WBC will support him completely during this difficult time. ”
