The IBF, WBA and WBO light heavyweight Champion Andre Ward retained his titles, stopping the Russian Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round, also retaining his Unbeaten record throughout his Pro Career.

The American had been behind, as the Russian threw 407 punches to Ward’s 238 by the time the stoppage came and Kovalev outlanded Ward 94-80, finishing his bitter rival with a flurry of body shots, but the much-anticipated rematch was overshadowed by another controversial call.

Ward now takes the position, as the best pound for pound fighter in the division but the Fans and pundits felt the stoppage was too early and Sergey Kovalev pointed out the reason for his fall to the ropes, "A low blow" he said

‘Why stop the fight?’ Kovalev said after citing a low blow as the reason he went down.
‘It was a low blow, again another one.
"We are both Boxers, I could still continue"

‘I have never been the most talented, I have never been the biggest, I just keep knocking down giants one by one,’ said Ward.

‘I’m ecstatic, I’m happy. I didn’t predict a knockout, but I said it could happen.

‘I’ve been boxing a long time and, sometimes, a lot of writers and reporters they don’t take you at your word.

‘If you look at my career and the way I’ve gone about things, I’m pretty matter of fact.
‘I’m pretty straightforward. I don’t say anything unless I mean it. I have a lot of respect for Kovalev.’
